GRAU began in 1987 when Tobias Grau founded his family‑run lighting studio in Hamburg, establishing a design language rooted in dynamic forms, refined surfaces and technologically forward illumination. Over the following decades, the company became a pioneer of LED lighting, creating iconic products such as Oh China, Falling and John while shifting its entire collection to LED as early as 2008. In 2017, brothers Timon and Melchior Grau - both artists and designers -assumed creative leadership and ushered in a new era, introducing portable lighting and atmospheric technologies like Sunset Dimming, a spectrum inspired by the sun’s calming hues. In 2022, the brand evolved into simply “GRAU,” embracing an expressive, emotion‑driven vision of light. Today, GRAU continues to craft all its luminaires in its Hamburg campus, merging craftsmanship and innovation to enrich everyday life with light that feels intuitive, sculptural and deeply human.
