As the name evokes, Utopia & Utility combines the functional with the fantastical. Founded in 2012 by siblings Pia and Moritz Wustenberg, the London based design duo makes products showcasing the skills of talented craftsmen around the globe privileging handmade production. Using natural materials, the duo creates one of a kind pieces reminiscent of nature with an exotic simplicity.
“We believe everything that deserves to be made deserved to be made well. From the process to the finished objects, our motivation is to entice life through beauty” says Pia Wustenberg. Using natural materials such as ceramic, metal, stone, wood, glass and paper they create products such as vases, candleholders, stools, glass lights, and bowls. The Stacking Vessels consists of three individual containers, all of which are formed with traditional craft processes. The ceramic and wood pieces are bridged by glass, which adheres to the other materials and creates a connective surface when heated. Each piece is handmade, unique and uses one of a kind natural materials.
Born 1986 in Germany, Pia studied an undergraduate degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship. Upon completion, she founded her design studio Piadesign in Finland. In 2009 Pia returned to London to join the Design Products department at the Royal College of Arts. Following her graduation in the summer of 2011, she moved her studio to East London. In 2012, she joined forces with her brother Moritz as her business partner and founded Utopia & Utility.
