On Tuesday, October 8, 2013 Luminaire had the distinct pleasure of hosting a special exhibition of Poul Kjærholm‘s elegant and timeless pieces at its Design District location, Luminaire Lab. On view until October 22, 2013 this exhibition was in collaboration with Fritz Hansen, who took over the production and sales in 1982 of what is known as “The Kjærholm Collection” – pieces developed from 1951 to 1967. It has been curated as a retrospective on an illustrious career, and includes some of the designer’s iconic pieces from the period like the PK22 Lounge chair, and some lesser-known but equally outstanding work such as the PK54 Table and PK9 Chair.

Born in Ǿster Vrȧ , Denmark, the renowned designer, architect and educator helped shape the perception of Danish design, and in the process, left a large imprint in the design world. His meticulous, methodical, and logical approach to design gave way to the highly sought feeling of exclusivity and mindfulness.

Originally trained as a carpenter, Mr. Kjærholm continued his studies at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. Unlike other Danish designers from the period; however, his use of newer, unconventional materials kept his work from appearing often at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibitions. In particular, he enjoyed working with steel and considered it a natural material with the same artistic fineness as other natural materials. Therefore, while he still maintained a close relationship with natural woods and traditional processes, his work was geared more towards mass production and the energy of the modern movement rather than arts and crafts.

We invite everyone to come to the Lab and experience personally the refined details and comfort of every item.
