On Thursday, October 4, Luminaire Lab hosted the opening reception for its latest exhibition, Cassina as seen by Karl. The event celebrated the release of the eponymous book produced and published by Gerhard Steidl. An monochromatic platform presented iconic pieces, specially produced by Cassina in black and white alongside large-format reproductions of Karl Lagerfeld’s photographs which were shown for the first time in the U.S. The cohesive exhibition adorned the front window of the showroom, creating captivating visual image for those passing on NE 2nd ave in Miami’s Design District.

In 2013 Lagerfeld collaborated with Cassina on his first photographic project for a furniture brand which explores the fashion designer’s unique perception and artistic vision through a selection of Cassina furniture personally chosen by himself to photograph. A true lover of design and considered to be one of most influential aesthetes of our time, Karl Lagerfeld has been a fan of the Cassina collection since the early 60’s, owning many of the photographed pieces.

During the event, over 150 guests experienced the exhibited photographs complemented by a selection of iconic pieces specially produced by Cassina as a tribute to the collaboration in black & white. On display are the Utrecht armchair by Gerrit T. Rietveld, the Tre Pezzi Wool armchair by Franco Albini, and the LC2 armchair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand as well as pieces from the Cassina collection in black and white finishes paired to complete the exhibition.

Throughout the evening, lovers of art, design, and fashion mingled while enjoying a curated playlist of French-themed tunes along with hors-d’oeuvres by Thierry Isambert including black and white macaroons, and generously provided Francois Montand champagne. Luminaire was happy to celebrate the opening with close friends including designer, Dodo Arslan, local philanthropist, Angela Birdman, publisher of Cultured Magazine, Gail Feldman, and fashion writer and author, Francesca Belluomini.

Cassina as seen by Karl is on show until early November and is available for view 10 am – 6 pm Monday – Saturday at Luminaire Lab in Miami’s Design District.
