In 1997, Luminaire celebrated the New Year by proudly joining forces with Vitra, a design-driven manufacturing company that also boasts an internationally recognized museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Vitra began in 1957 as a family-run business that manufactured pieces by George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames. Over the years, Vitra has worked tirelessly to advance an international admiration of design and architecture, turning the most influential design pieces into household names.
Always a pioneer, Vitra works closely with emerging designers like Jerzey Seymour to push the boundaries of contemporary design, while at the same time producing historically seminal pieces by established designers such as Verner Panton, Le Corbusier and Jean Prouve. This marriage between innovative experimentation and formidable design history also permeates Luminaire’s philosophy and practices, making Vitra products a perfect addition to Luminaire’s collection.
The Vitra Debut reception in January 1997 showcased the latest Vitra chair miniatures from leading 20th century designers. These models, seminal pieces from design history on a reduced scale, are teaching objects that make important design accessible to a wide audience. Many visitors who may have otherwise not been able to afford one of Vitra’s designs were therefore about to bring good design home with them.
The connections the formed between the products and public made this New Year’s debut a great success, enlightening many minds to the power of remarkable design.
