Patricia Urquiola conceived the Vieques bathtub in 2008, originally for the W Hotel Vieques Island. The brief was atmospheric: capture the restorative quality of the Caribbean island, its sense of immersion, of deliberate withdrawal from the pace of things. What emerged was a form that reaches back to the deep, enveloping silhouette of historical bathtubs and arrives, through Urquiola's hand, at something entirely of its moment.
The construction is freestanding steel, offered in white, dark grey, or light grey exterior finishes. An optional iroko wood shelf and backrest introduce a counterpoint of natural warmth, softening the geometry without dissolving it. The dialogue between the precision of the steel shell and the grain of the wood is where the design's sensibility lives.
