First established in 1954, it recognizes design that achieves a meaningful synthesis of function, form, and cultural relevance. The Sampei received this distinction in 2014.

The Sampei was conceived collaboratively by Enzo Calabrese and Davide Groppi. Davide Groppi is a Piacenza-based designer known for reducing lighting to its most poetic essentials, with a body of work that consistently prioritizes atmosphere and restraint over ornamentation.

The Sampei is constructed from matte black metal and fiberglass, a pairing chosen for its structural lightness and outdoor durability. The fiberglass rod contributes to the lamp's characteristic slenderness while maintaining the flexibility needed to sustain its considerable height.

The Sampei is adjustable in height and can reach approximately 14 feet at its full extension, which reinforces its characteristic fishing-rod silhouette and allows it to cast light from a significant elevation.
