Ichnos Blue Vase
Ivan Baj conceived the Ichnos vase in 2019 as a study in restraint: a form so precise it reads almost as drawing, yet so dependent on the breath and hand of a Murano master that no two are identical. The name, drawn from the Greek word for "trace" or "imprint," speaks directly to that relationship between designer intention and artisan gesture.
Produced on the island of Murano off Venice, the Ichnos Blue Vase is mouth-blown and individually shaped using glassmaking traditions that reach back centuries. Its deep, saturated cobalt is not applied but inherent to the glass itself, achieved through the controlled introduction of mineral colorants during the melt. The result is a blue of genuine depth, one that shifts with available light.
- Designed by Ivan Baj, 2019
- Hand-blown by master artisans in Murano, Italy
- Available as Vase A (tall) or Vase B (short), sold separately
- Each piece carries subtle variations natural to mouth-blown production
The Ichnos series is produced by ARCADE, a Milan-based design house that positions craft objects at the intersection of art and function. Baj's sculptural sensibility and ARCADE's commitment to traditional fabrication make each vase a singular object, not a reproduction of itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Murano glass different from other art glass?
Murano glass is produced on the island of Murano near Venice, where glassmaking guilds have operated since the 13th century. The techniques, including mouth-blowing, lampworking, and millefiori, are passed through generations of master artisans. The controlled environment of the island historically preserved these methods, and Murano-made pieces are recognized for their color depth, wall consistency, and the irreplaceable presence of the human hand in every form.
Will two Ichnos vases look exactly the same?
No. Mouth-blown glass production introduces natural variation in wall thickness, surface texture, and the precise trajectory of the form. These differences are intrinsic to the process and considered part of the object's character rather than imperfections.
Who is Ivan Baj and what is his design background?
Ivan Baj is an Italian designer whose practice centers on objects and furnishings that engage with craft traditions while maintaining a rigorous formal language. His work for ARCADE reflects a consistent interest in the dialogue between industrial precision and artisanal process.
What is ARCADE as a design brand?
ARCADE is a Milan-based design house focused on limited-edition objects produced through traditional craft methods. The brand works with designers and artisans to create pieces that occupy the space between functional design and collectible art.
Can the Ichnos Blue Vase hold water and fresh flowers?
Murano glass vases of this type are generally suitable for use with water and cut flowers, though care should be taken to avoid sudden thermal shock, such as filling a room-temperature piece with very hot water. Gentle cleaning by hand is recommended to preserve the integrity of the glass and its color.
