FF.Spine is a freestanding bookcase conceived by Amsterdam-based studio Formafantasma for Cassina. Its structural vocabulary is spare and geometric, built from an internal upright frame of epoxy powder-coated steel tubing, solid wood support brackets and uprights, and MDF shelves constructed as an aluminum-and-wood-veneer sandwich. Each element is load-bearing in its own right, and the system's modularity allows configurations to grow or contract with the space it inhabits.
The design is rooted in a precise relationship with wood as a material. Rather than treating solid wood as a uniform surface, Formafantasma selected and varied the grain and cut of each element to reflect the natural character of the trunk it came from. The modular logic of the system is calibrated to minimize waste, drawing from as much of each tree as possible.
Formafantasma, founded by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, is known for research-driven practice that positions material origins and ecological systems at the center of form-making. FF.Spine carries that sensibility visibly: the variation in wood grain across a single bookcase is not incidental but intentional, a record of the tree's growth written into the object's surface.
