Family Chairs

Cataphoresis is an electrochemical priming process in which paint is deposited onto the metal through an electrical current, creating a highly uniform, corrosion-resistant base coat. On the Family Chairs, this layer works beneath the powder coat to protect the steel from moisture and oxidation, making the chairs durable in outdoor conditions.

Junya Ishigami is a Tokyo-based architect and designer known for work that dissolves the boundary between structure and environment. He founded his practice junya.ishigami+associates in 2004 and received the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010. His furniture design, like his architecture, often questions the visual weight and stability of form.

The Family Chairs are a collection of five distinct chairs, each with its own distorted profile. Availability as a set or individually depends on current configuration options, so consulting a designer or showroom representative is recommended for specification purposes.

The combination of powder coating and cataphoresis treatment makes the chairs appropriate for both interior and exterior use, including covered outdoor settings. The steel construction and white finish are particularly well suited to Mediterranean or minimalist outdoor environments.

Ishigami drew from the social image of a family at a table, where each person shares fundamental traits yet has a distinct presence. The chairs translate this idea into steel form: same material, same basic geometry, but each piece carries a subtle optical distortion that gives it individual character within the group.
