Junya Ishigami

Born 1974 | Japan

Junya Ishigami is a Japanese architect and designer whose work has redefined the boundaries between architecture, landscape, object, and atmosphere. Born in 1974 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, he completed his master's degree in architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts, then worked with Kazuyo Sejima before founding junya.ishigami+associates in 2004. From the beginning, his practice has been marked by an exceptional sensitivity to natural phenomena and an interest in making architecture feel lighter, freer, and less constrained by conventional definitions.

Over the years, Ishigami has become internationally celebrated for projects that dissolve the line between built form and environment. Works such as the Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop, the Water Garden at Art Biotop, and the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion reflect his distinctive ability to create spaces that feel at once experimental, delicate, and deeply immersive. His work has been recognized with major honors including the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize and the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and it continues to stand out for its quiet radicalism, technical daring, and extraordinary sense of wonder.
