Dot Suspension Lamp
Made by Lumina Italia
Designed by Foster + Partners for Lumina Italia, Dot reduces the pendant lamp to its geometric minimum: two parallel discs, one metal stem, one unbroken plane of diffused light. The form reads almost as an optical illusion, a disc of light suspended without apparent source.
The smaller disc houses a ring of LEDs whose light bounces upward onto the larger reflector disc, finished in a super-matte white that absorbs glare and returns only softness. A custom heat-pipe draws thermal energy away from the light engine and into the reflector's heat sink, a solution that made the extreme miniaturization of the head possible without compromise to longevity or output.
- Available in two sizes
- Super-matte white reflector finish
- Integrated heat-pipe thermal management
- Suitable as a single pendant or composed into a chandelier cluster
Dot is a study in what disappears when craft and engineering align: hardware, mechanics, and heat, all absorbed into a form that seems to generate light by will alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Dot Suspension Lamp?
Dot was designed by Foster + Partners, the London-based architecture and design practice founded by Norman Foster. Known for precision and structural clarity, the studio has produced a small but rigorous body of product design alongside its architectural work.
How does the Dot lamp's heat-pipe technology work?
A custom heat-pipe conducts thermal energy away from the LED light engine and dissipates it through the larger reflector disc, which acts as a heat sink. This approach allows the lamp head to be miniaturized far beyond what conventional passive cooling permits.
Can Dot pendants be grouped into a chandelier cluster?
Yes. The Dot is engineered for use both as a single pendant and as a composed cluster of multiple units, allowing architects and designers to scale the installation to the spatial volume and desired light distribution.
What sizes is the Lumina Italia Dot available in?
The Dot Suspension Lamp is offered in two sizes, providing flexibility for different ceiling heights and room proportions while maintaining the same visual language across both.
What type of light source does the Dot use?
Dot uses a ring of integrated LEDs housed within the smaller disc. The LEDs direct light upward onto the larger matte-white reflector, which then distributes an even, diffused downlight with no visible source.
