BM5868 Side Table
Made by Carl Hansen & Søn
Designed by Børge Mogensen
Børge Mogensen believed that good design serves life without drawing attention to itself. The BM5868 Side Table is a precise expression of that conviction - a compact, low-profile form in untreated FSC-certified teak that asks nothing of the eye and offers everything to the hand.
Teak was chosen for its density and natural resilience. Left untreated, the wood moves through a slow transformation from warm honey to a silver-grey patina, a process Mogensen understood as part of the object's life rather than a departure from it. The joinery is clean, the proportions considered, the silhouette spare.
- Untreated, FSC-certified solid teak construction
- Designed for outdoor use alongside lounge and garden furniture
- Weather-resistant without surface treatment
- Compact form suited to terraces, balconies, and garden settings
Mogensen's furniture has been in continuous production through Carl Hansen & Søn for decades, a reflection of designs that were resolved from the outset. The BM5868 fits naturally into that canon - modest in gesture, certain in form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the teak on the BM5868 change color over time?
Yes. Untreated teak weathers naturally from its original warm tone to a silver-grey patina when exposed to sun and rain. This is an inherent quality of the wood, not a sign of deterioration. Applying teak oil periodically can slow the process and preserve the warmer tone if preferred.
Does the BM5868 require any maintenance outdoors?
Teak is naturally high in oils and silica, making it exceptionally resistant to moisture, insects, and decay without treatment. Occasional cleaning with mild soap and water is generally sufficient. If the silver patina is not desired, a light sanding followed by teak oil can restore the original color.
What is FSC-certified teak, and why does it matter?
FSC certification means the teak is sourced from forests managed to strict environmental and social standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council. It ensures the wood's chain of custody is traceable and that harvesting practices support long-term forest health.
Who was Børge Mogensen, and what defined his design approach?
Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was a Danish furniture designer whose work centered on function, honesty of material, and democratic accessibility. Trained under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy, he developed a vocabulary of restrained, durable forms rooted in Scandinavian craft tradition. His pieces remain in production today because they were resolved at their conception.
What outdoor furniture pairs well with the BM5868?
The BM5868 was conceived as a companion to lounge and garden seating. It works naturally alongside other Mogensen pieces in the Carl Hansen & Søn outdoor range, as well as with low-slung chairs and daybeds from mid-century or Scandinavian-influenced collections where its spare profile and teak materiality create a coherent dialogue.
