Stefan Diez is a German industrial designer whose work is distinguished by technical clarity, formal restraint, and a deeply considered approach to how products are made and used. Born in 1971 in Freising, Germany, he was raised in a family of carpenters, an early influence that shaped his lasting respect for craftsmanship and construction. After training as a cabinetmaker, he studied industrial design under Richard Sapper at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, then worked with Konstantin Grcic before founding his own Munich-based studio in 2002.
Over the years, Diez has developed a practice that spans furniture, lighting, accessories, and exhibition design, collaborating with leading international brands including Magis, Vibia, HAY, e15, Emu, Rosenthal, Thonet, and Wilkhahn. His work is especially admired for joining engineering intelligence with elegance and ease, producing objects that feel both innovative and enduring. More recently, his studio has become closely associated with circular design principles, exploring how contemporary products can be more adaptable, repairable, and responsible without sacrificing beauty or performance.
