George Nelson

Born 1908 | United States

George Nelson was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1908. Trained as an architect at Yale, he became influential not only through objects but through ideas, writing, and direction. In 1947, Herman Miller appointed him Director of Design, a role he held for decades, and he used it to build a roster of modern talent while shaping a clear, forward-looking vision for American interiors.

Alongside his studio, George Nelson Associates, he developed enduring furniture, clocks, and interior systems that paired clarity with everyday usefulness. His legacy includes both iconic forms and the broader notion that design is connected to social life, work habits, and how people move through space. Nelson died in New York City in 1986.
