Enzo Mari

Born 1932 | Italy

Enzo Mari was born in 1932 in Novara, Italy, and studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. He became one of the most intellectually significant voices in modern Italian design, combining a strong theoretical position with an extraordinary body of work across furniture, objects, graphics, and exhibitions. His practice consistently questioned consumer culture and pushed for design that was honest, rational, and made to last.

Across his career, Mari created celebrated projects for major manufacturers and received multiple Compasso d’Oro awards. He was also known for using design as a cultural and political tool, arguing that objects shape society and should carry ethical responsibility. Mari died in Milan in 2020.
