Dagmar Mombach

Born 1958 | Germany

Dagmar Mombach is a German designer and artist best known for her close creative partnership with Ingo Maurer. Together, they developed sculptural paper lighting that treats light as something intimate and atmospheric, with forms that feel handmade, weightless, and quietly dramatic. The MaMo Nouchies series, whose name combines their surnames and references Isamu Noguchi, became one of their most recognized bodies of work.

Central to Mombach’s contribution is a distinctive paper-transforming technique: Japanese paper is shaped by hand through a process of pulling and folding, resulting in shades that appear both delicate and architecturally structured. This craft-forward approach, carried out in her own workshop or studio setting, gives the lamps their signature softness and sculptural presence.

Mombach’s technique, all performed by hand, involves the manipulation of plain sheets of paper, by pulling and folding.
