Ari Kanerva is a Finnish furniture and product designer whose work is defined by visual balance, functional intelligence, and a distinctly refined sense of restraint. Born in Lahti, Finland, he first studied furniture and stone design at Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences before continuing in Spatial and Furniture Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, where he earned his MA in 2008. Alongside his studies, he worked in the Finnish furniture industry as a technical designer, an experience that helped shape the practical and ergonomic clarity that remains central to his work.
In 2010, Kanerva founded his own studio and established his practice in Turku, focusing on furniture and product design while also assisting companies with product development. His work is frequently described through its careful attention to intended use, ergonomics, and detail, resulting in pieces that feel calm, precise, and quietly distinctive. Public profiles also note that he was named Finland's Furniture Designer of the Year in 2019, reinforcing his place within contemporary Nordic design.
