Mario Botta was born on April 1, 1943, in Mendrisio, Ticino, Switzerland. After an apprenticeship in Lugano, he studied in Milan and later at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice, graduating in 1969 under Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol. While in Venice, he also had the opportunity to meet and work with Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn, experiences that helped shape his disciplined, construction-focused approach. He began his professional career in 1970, opening his practice in Lugano.
Botta became widely recognized through his early houses in Ticino and later expanded his work to museums, banks, schools, libraries, and sacred architecture. His projects often rely on clear primary forms, carefully controlled openings, and a deliberate use of materials like brick and stone, with light treated as a central design tool rather than an afterthought. Alongside practice, he has taught and lectured internationally, reinforcing his role as both builder and thinker within contemporary architecture.
