Hymn Cordless Lamp
Made by Ambientec
Hiroto Yoshizoe drew his inspiration from a semi-underground chapel in Florence, where a single candle set stone walls in motion with shifting light. The Hymn Cordless Lamp translates that memory into a precise, portable object, converting the emotional grammar of open flame into contemporary form.
At the center of the design is a pendulum lens suspended by a magnet. Refraction concentrates illumination so that light appears to emerge solely from the tip of an acrylic column. The gentle sway of the pendulum produces a wavering quality that reads as breath rather than electricity. When switched off, the lamp extinguishes with a slow fade, the way a flame surrenders to darkness.
- Rechargeable and fully cordless construction
- Magnetic pendulum lens creates organic, flame-like movement
- Acrylic column concentrates light to a single luminous point
- Suited for interior and covered outdoor settings
- Slow-fade off sequence replicates the rhythm of extinguishing a candle
Yoshizoe's practice consistently finds the meeting point between material restraint and atmospheric effect. The Hymn is not a reproduction of candlelight but a meditation on it, an object that holds memory as form.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Hymn Lamp simulate a candle flame?
A pendulum lens suspended by a magnet sways gently inside the lamp, causing the refracted light to waver in a way that closely resembles the movement of an open flame. The optics concentrate the glow at the very tip of the acrylic column, reinforcing the illusion.
Is the Hymn Lamp suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The lamp is cordless and rechargeable, making it well suited for sheltered outdoor settings such as terraces, garden tables, or covered patios where a power outlet is unavailable.
Who is Hiroto Yoshizoe?
Hiroto Yoshizoe is a Japanese designer whose practice focuses on the intersection of craft, light, and emotional memory. His work for Ambientec explores how portable lighting objects can carry cultural and atmospheric weight beyond their function.
What is Ambientec's design philosophy?
Ambientec is a Tokyo-based lighting studio that treats cordless lamps as autonomous objects, free from the constraints of fixed wiring. Each design is developed around a specific emotional or experiential premise rather than a purely technical brief.
How long does the battery last on a full charge?
Battery life varies by brightness setting, but Ambientec cordless lamps are generally engineered for several hours of continuous use on a single charge, making them practical for extended evenings at the table or outdoors.
