Homage to Mondrian
Made by Cappellini
Designed by Shiro Kuramata
Shiro Kuramata conceived this cabinet in 1975 as a direct dialogue with the paintings of Piet Mondrian, the Dutch painter whose grid compositions redefined visual language in the twentieth century. The result is furniture that reads as much as object as it does artwork.
Each door and drawer is a different size, a deliberate formal choice that mirrors the asymmetric balance Mondrian achieved through proportion rather than symmetry. The restricted palette of black, white, red, blue, and yellow arrives in two matte lacquered configurations, each a precise transposition of Mondrian's vocabulary onto three-dimensional form.
- Matte lacquered wood construction in two colour configurations
- Asymmetric doors and drawers suited to storing objects of varying scale
- Mounted on wheels for ease of placement
Kuramata, one of the most singular voices in postwar Japanese design, brought a poet's sensibility to furniture. His work for Cappellini consistently pushed at the boundary between design and fine art, and this cabinet stands as one of the clearest expressions of that instinct.
