Marc Newson designed the Felt Chair in 1993, and its silhouette has lost none of its tension. The shell is formed from reinforced fibreglass, varnished to a high-gloss finish in five distinct colours: white, orange, red, blue, or black. Against that colour, the rear back support in natural polished aluminium reads as a quiet structural counterpoint.
Newson's approach draws from aerospace and industrial design as much as from furniture tradition. The Felt Chair's single-form shell suggests movement even at rest, its curves continuous rather than assembled. Cappellini has produced it since its debut, keeping the geometry and finish exactly as Newson resolved them.
