Dé Espresso Cup
Made by Serax
Designed by Ann Demeulemeester
The Dé collection emerges from Ann Demeulemeester's long dialogue with chiaroscuro, the interplay of light and shadow that has defined her aesthetic across decades of fashion. Translated into porcelain, that sensibility becomes something to hold.
Each espresso cup is hand-painted in successive layers, building a dégradé gradient along the rim that shifts from depth to near-absence of color. No two cups are identical. The bowl-shaped form sits low and wide, grounded by a handle placed horizontally, a quiet departure from convention that feels entirely considered.
- Fine porcelain construction
- Hand-painted dégradé edge, applied in multiple layers
- Bowl-shaped silhouette with a horizontally oriented handle
- Coordinates with the full Dé Dinnerware Collection
- Each piece is unique due to the handcraft process
Designed by Ann Demeulemeester in collaboration with Serax, the Dé collection brings the precision and restraint of her fashion vocabulary into the domestic ritual of the table.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes each Dé Espresso Cup unique?
Because the dégradé edge is applied by hand in multiple paint layers, the gradation of tone varies from cup to cup. No two pieces are identical, making each one a singular object.
What is the Dé collection's design concept?
Dé is rooted in Ann Demeulemeester's signature use of chiaroscuro, the tension between light and shadow. The collection translates that visual language into hand-painted porcelain tableware, treating the cup as a canvas for layered brushwork.
Can the Dé Espresso Cup be mixed with other pieces in the collection?
Yes. The varied tonal gradations across individual pieces are intentional, and the collection is designed to be combined freely, allowing personal arrangements that reward the differences between cups.
Who is Ann Demeulemeester?
Ann Demeulemeester is a Belgian fashion designer and one of the Antwerp Six, the group of avant-garde designers who emerged from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in the 1980s. Her work is known for its poetic austerity, monochromatic depth, and meticulous craft.
Is the Dé Espresso Cup dishwasher safe?
Serax recommends hand washing for pieces with hand-painted finishes to preserve the integrity of the layered dégradé decoration over time.
