Dancing Squares Lamps
Designed by Nendo
By folding geometrically patterned steel sheet into spherical volumes, Nendo gave physical form to the idea of motion held still. The Dancing Squares lamps appear to roll, yet rest with quiet stability, their faceted planes finding balance through pure geometry.
Light passes through a carefully considered pattern of solids and voids, projecting shifting pools across walls and floor. The effect changes with viewing angle and distance, making each placement a distinct atmospheric decision.
Originally presented in Nendo's 2011 exhibition of the same name, the lamps entered production through Specimen Editions in recognition of their formal resolution. Three heights, 34, 54, and 74 cm, allow the form to read as table object, floor presence, or suspended sculpture. A 75-inch cord accommodates hardwired suspension or plug-in use, giving the piece genuine flexibility across architectural contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Dancing Squares lamps?
The Dancing Squares lamps were designed by Nendo, the Tokyo-based studio led by Oki Sato. Known for work that sits at the boundary of sculpture and product design, Nendo first presented this piece in a 2011 solo exhibition before it entered production through Specimen Editions.
What is Specimen Editions known for?
Specimen Editions is a French publisher of limited and small-batch design objects, frequently collaborating with internationally recognized designers to bring exhibition works and conceptual pieces into careful, considered production.
Can the Dancing Squares lamp be hardwired as a pendant?
Yes. The lamp ships with a 75-inch cord that can be hardwired for use as a suspension lamp or fitted with the included plug for floor or table placement, making it adaptable to a range of installation scenarios.
What sizes does the Dancing Squares lamp come in?
The lamp is available in three heights: 34 cm, 54 cm, and 74 cm. Each size carries the same geometric logic, but reads differently in space, from an intimate tabletop object to a commanding floor presence.
How does the steel construction affect the quality of light?
The folded steel sphere is defined by a precise pattern of open voids and solid planes. Light passes through the openings and is partially reflected off the steel surfaces, projecting a layered, directional glow that varies depending on the lamp's orientation and the surrounding architecture.
