Cloud Bookcase
Made by Cappellini
Cloud began as a question about accumulation. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec conceived this modular shelving system for Cappellini not as a fixed object but as a structure that grows with use, shaped as much by what it holds as by the space around it.
Each unit is formed from white polyethylene through rotational molding, a process that produces hollow, seamless forms with a softness rarely encountered in structural furniture. The individual elements connect via white metal pressure clips and can be oriented horizontally or vertically, allowing compositions to extend across a wall or rise freestanding from the floor.
- Rotationally molded white polyethylene construction
- Modular units with horizontal and vertical orientation
- White metal pressure clips for assembly
- Suitable for wall-mounted or freestanding configurations
The result is something closer to an aerial formation than a conventional bookcase. Each arrangement is a consequence of context, never quite the same twice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What material is the Cloud Bookcase made from?
The Cloud Bookcase is constructed from rotationally molded white polyethylene. This manufacturing process creates hollow, seamless forms that are lightweight yet durable, and resistant to the conditions of outdoor environments.
Can the Cloud Bookcase be used outdoors?
Yes. The polyethylene construction makes it suitable for outdoor use, as the material resists moisture and UV exposure without requiring special finishing or treatment.
How do multiple Cloud units connect to each other?
Each unit comes with two white metal pressure clips designed to join modules securely. The clip system requires no tools and allows configurations to be adjusted or expanded over time.
Who are Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec?
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are French brothers and design partners whose practice spans furniture, textiles, lighting, and installation. Based in Paris, they have collaborated with leading European manufacturers including Vitra, Magis, and Cappellini, and their work is held in the permanent collections of major design and art museums worldwide.
Is the Cloud Bookcase available in configurations beyond a single unit?
The Cloud system is modular by design. Single units can be multiplied and arranged in a wide range of compositions by combining elements horizontally and vertically, allowing the structure to be scaled to fit different spatial contexts.
