Bagdad Portable Lamp
Made by GUBI
Designed by Mathieu Matégot
Mathieu Matégot conceived the Bagdad Lamp in 1954, channeling the same perforated metal vocabulary he had developed across furniture, trays, and decorative objects throughout the postwar decades. Its geometric, cubist form is anchored by a comet-like fin that gives the composition both wit and weight.
GUBI's contemporary edition reduces the original to half its scale, translating a sculptural icon into an object suited for the table, the terrace, or any surface that calls for deliberate light. The lamp is fully rechargeable and responds to a touch-sensitive dimmer with three brightness settings.
- Rechargeable with touch-sensitive three-level dimmer

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Bagdad Lamp and when?
The Bagdad Lamp was designed by French-Hungarian artist and designer Mathieu Matégot in 1954. Matégot is best known for his pioneering use of perforated and lacquered metal, a material language he applied across furniture, lighting, and decorative objects throughout the postwar period.
How does the GUBI Bagdad Portable Lamp charge?
The lamp is rechargeable via a USB connection, making it fully cord-free during use. A built-in touch-sensitive dimmer cycles through three brightness levels, allowing precise control of the light output.
How does the portable edition differ from the original 1954 design?
GUBI's contemporary edition is produced at half the scale of Matégot's original, optimizing the form for portability and domestic use while preserving the distinctive perforated metal construction and comet-fin silhouette.
What finish and color options are available for the Bagdad Lamp?
The lamp is offered in Black, White, and International Orange, each finished in lacquered perforated metal consistent with Matégot's original material approach.
Is the Bagdad Lamp suitable for outdoor use?
The cord-free, rechargeable design makes it well suited for sheltered outdoor settings such as terraces or balconies, though it is not rated for exposure to rain or direct weather. Confirming specific IP ratings with the manufacturer is recommended for outdoor placement.
