Tord Boontje

Born 1968 | Netherlands

Tord Boontje is a Dutch designer born in Enschede, the Netherlands, in 1968. He studied industrial design at the Design Academy Eindhoven and later earned a master's degree in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art in London. In 1996, he founded Studio Tord Boontje, establishing a practice that would become widely recognized for bringing romance, delicacy, and narrative feeling into contemporary design.

Over the years, Boontje has built an international body of work spanning furniture, lighting, textiles, and objects for brands including Moroso, Artecnica, Swarovski, and others. His best-known designs, such as Garland Light, Blossom, Transglass, Shadowy Chair, and Fig Wardrobe, are celebrated for combining technical invention with a sense of enchantment, often transforming industrial processes into forms that feel organic, intricate, and emotionally resonant. Beyond practice, he has also played an important role in design education, serving as professor at the Royal College of Art and later as a visiting professor in Europe and China. His work is held in major museum collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and MoMA.

I believe that if we see design as a way of shaping the future of our world, it should be as exciting and thrilling as a great film or book.
