Timon Grau is a German designer, creative director, and co-leader of GRAU, the Hamburg-based studio redefining the way light is experienced in contemporary interiors and environments. Together with his brother Melchior, Timon took over the creative direction of the family lighting company, originally founded by their parents, in 2021, ushering in a new era of design that blurs the boundaries between art, technology, and sensory experience.
Raised in a creative environment, Timon and Melchior studied art and design in Berlin and Frankfurt, where their multidisciplinary training, including influences from artists and thinkers such as Ai Weiwei and Hito Steyerl, helped shape their unique design perspective. Today, Timon focuses on how light can activate emotion, wellbeing, and human connection, believing that lighting design should go beyond function to become an expressive and transformative experience.
Under his leadership, GRAU has grown into an interdisciplinary platform of around 150 creatives, producing lighting products, installations, and exhibitions that explore new relationships between light, space, and people. All of the studio’s designs are developed and manufactured at its Hamburg headquarters with a focus on quality, innovation, sustainability, and lasting emotional impact.
