Stefan Schöning is a Belgian designer born in Antwerp in 1968. He graduated in product development from the Henry van de Velde Institute in Antwerp and established his multidisciplinary studio in 1994. From the beginning, his work has moved across industrial design, public commissions, and collectible objects, building a practice defined by clarity, formal control, and a refined approach to material and process.
He gained international recognition with the Folder chair in 2001, a piece cut and folded from a single sheet that quickly became a contemporary classic. Gardeco notes that his career expanded soon after with assignments from an increasing number of international manufacturers, while his redesign of the Belgian railways' corporate style in 2005 brought wider public attention and multiple international accolades. In 2008, he was named Designer of the Year, and in later years his work extended toward sculptural and decorative objects, including glass, ceramic, cork, wood, and aluminum pieces for interiors and public spaces. Across these projects, Schöning's work stands out for its balance between precision and poetry, often drawing on nature, abstraction, and rhythm without losing a strong architectural sense of order.
