Nathan Martell

Born 1985 | Canada

Nathan Martell was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, in 1985. He studied industrial design at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver and later worked with Canadian design companies molo and Bensen. In 2014, he established his independent studio, developing a practice centered on furniture and domestic objects shaped by open-ended research, material experimentation, and a close understanding of manufacturing.

Martell co-founded Part & Whole in 2018 and served as its design director through 2024, gaining firsthand experience across product development, production, and brand building. His work explores modularity, standardization, and industrially driven craft, with construction treated as a defining visual language. Designs such as the Seam tables and Layup Lounge Chair reveal this approach through purposeful junctions, sculptural clarity, and advanced fabrication. Introduced by Established & Sons in 2026, Layup extends the possibilities of molded veneer through a continuous, precisely resolved wooden form.

Through research, experimentation, and exploration, I try to come up with a detail or a core idea that can carry and drive the project.
