Huub Ubbens was born in the Netherlands in 1964 and studied design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He later moved to Italy, where he developed an extensive career in lighting and product design. From 1997 to 2004, Ubbens led the design department at Artemide and also served as art director of Danese Milano. During this period, he collaborated with influential designers including Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Naoto Fukasawa, James Irvine, and Michele De Lucchi.
In 2005, he founded Studio Ubbens in Milan, later relocating the practice to Montpellier in southern France. The studio works across product design, furniture, lighting, art direction, architectural illumination, and objects related to well-being. Ubbens has collaborated with companies including Artemide, Danese Milano, Panasonic, 3M, BBB Italia, Castorama, and Fiat. His Castore lighting collection, designed with Michele De Lucchi for Artemide, reflects his ability to combine softly diffused illumination with a pure, recognizable silhouette. His broader practice is guided by durability, restraint, and the belief that meaningful objects should remain relevant beyond temporary trends.
