Haldane Martin

Haldane Martin was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1970 and studied industrial design at Cape Technikon in Cape Town, graduating in 1992. He began working in furniture design in the early 1990s and developed his own practice through Brave New World before establishing Haldane Martin in 2002. His early work gained recognition for combining modern production techniques with references to South African culture, particularly in designs such as the Zulu Mama Chair and Songololo Sofa.

Based in Cape Town, Martin has expanded his practice across furniture, lighting, interiors, and hospitality design. His collections include indoor and outdoor pieces defined by elegant proportions, durable materials, and a sophisticated use of color, while projects for restaurants, hotels, and residences demonstrate his broader spatial approach. His work frequently explores the relationship between contemporary design and South African identity, combining artisanal production with advanced manufacturing and an emphasis on longevity.
