Giancarlo Mattioli

Born 1933 | Italy

Giancarlo Mattioli was born in Bologna in 1933 and became known in the 1950s and 1960s as a designer, architect, and urban planner with a strong civic focus. He worked with the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Citta Nuova and combined product design with long-term public service, contributing to major planning work for the Municipality of Bologna and remaining in its technical offices until 1999.

In design history, Mattioli is most closely associated with the Nesso table lamp for Artemide, developed with Citta Nuova and presented as a plastic lighting object inspired by natural forms, often described as jellyfish-like. The project grew out of the Studio Artemide Domus competition context and became a lasting symbol of 1960s Italian design, still widely recognized today. Mattioli died on May 21, 2018.
