Daniel Libeskind

Daniel Libeskind

Born 1946 | Poland

Daniel Libeskind is a Polish-born American architect, artist, and designer born on May 12, 1946, in Lodz, Poland. As a child, he was first recognized for his musical talent and trained as an accordion prodigy before ultimately turning toward architecture. His family moved first to Israel and later to New York, where Libeskind continued his education and went on to study architecture at Cooper Union, later completing postgraduate work in history and theory at the University of Essex. These early experiences across different cultures and disciplines helped shape a practice deeply concerned with memory, displacement, and the emotional power of space.

He founded Studio Libeskind with his wife, Nina, in 1989 after winning the competition for the Jewish Museum Berlin, the project that brought him international recognition. Since then, his work has spanned museums, cultural institutions, residential towers, master plans, interiors, and design objects, always distinguished by a strong narrative dimension and a formal language of fractured geometries, sharp lines, and spatial intensity. His official studio presents this approach as one that combines a global perspective with sensitivity to local culture, history, and environment. Libeskind remains one of the defining voices in contemporary architecture and design for the way he brings symbolism, memory, and human experience into built form.

Architecture is not based on concrete and steel, and the elements of the soil. It's based on wonder.
