Axel Schmid

Born 1971 | Germany

Axel Schmid is a German product and lighting designer whose work explores light as both a functional medium and a spatial, emotional presence. Born in 1971, he first trained in metalworking and woodworking before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where he graduated in 1997. A scholarship from the Association of German Industrial Designers then took him to Japan, an experience that helped broaden the cultural and material sensitivity that shapes his work today.

After returning to Germany in 1998, Schmid joined Ingo Maurer's creative team in Munich and went on to develop some of the studio's most distinctive contemporary lighting pieces. Designs such as 24 Karat Blau, Five Pack, and Jetzt reflect his ability to merge technical intelligence with a sense of wonder, often treating light as something almost tangible. Alongside these collaborations, his independent practice has focused for more than two decades on the relationship between objects, interiors, and the sensory effect of light within space.
