Changing lives through good design for 21 years is an electrifying reason to celebrate. Connecting, sharing stories, opening minds and inspiring the public, Luminaire hosted ‘Milan in Miami’, and evening gala and exhibition to honor the 21st anniversary at the Coral Gables showroom. Over twenty guest manufacturers attended, including Piero Busnelli of B&B Italia, infusing the event with remarkable insights and stimulating conversation.

Guests of honor Antonio Citterio and Terry Dwan presented a memorable lecture on their work, leaving guests understanding the design team not simply as superstars of design, but as ‘hot-burning supernovas,’ whose minimalist, high energy and user friendly work has been a must see at Milan’s Salone del Mobile for over 20 years.

“Every product has an emotional starting point,” says Citterio. “My work is about trying to rationalise my initial emotional response to each project.”

Working together from 1987-1996, Citterio and his California-born wife, architect Terry Dwan, approached creative problems holistically, fusing design and architecture with a signature Italian sense of style, elegantly modern and restrained, and a state-of-the-art functionality. Some of their architecture collaborations include such as the residential and commercial development in Seregno, Milan, the Vitra furniture factory in Neuenburg, Germany, and the experimental building in Kumamoto City which brings together Japanese and Western styles of living. With a fundamentally human appeal, their work has twice earned the esteemed Compass d’Oro design award.

Luminaire’s 21st anniversary exhibition also celebrated the best in design with the latest pieces from the Salone del Mobile, exposing cutting edge innovation and poetic forms for the Miami public to explore first hand. Design as a philosophy and holistic experience became a much discussed theme at this extraordinary celebration of 21 years of good design.
