On March 3 Luminaire Chicago welcomed Fritz Hansen’s master upholsterer of the iconic Egg™ chair to demonstrate the craftsmanship behind the making of the chair. Designed by renowned Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, the legendary chair unites the functional objectivity of modernism with organic forms showing the architect’s acute sense of proportion.
Attendees were able to witness Fritz Hansen’s master upholsterer Hans Thure Mannergan hand-sew and apply the finishing touches to the Egg™ chair. Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg™ chair in 1958 for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The commission to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture was Jacobsen’s grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg™ chair is one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s total design.
Fritz Hansen was established in 1872 by the visionary cabinetmaker of the same name. The exclusive design brand is characterized by stupendous craftsmanship, unique design and an inherent sense of premium quality. Luminaire believes in the importance of creating and nurturing enduring relationships with designers, manufacturers and clients through educational endeavors. We are proud to be a promotional vehicle demonstrating the thought process and craft behind what constitutes good design.
